About The Septic Guide

We built the directory we wanted when we needed a septic contractor: every listing checked against the state's own license list.

Last updated

The Septic Guide is a national directory of septic contractors built on state license data, with plain-English guides to how septic systems work, what septic work costs and how to hire for it. As of October 2026, The Septic Guide lists 28,538 septic companies and licensed septic professionals in 45 states, and 27,059 of them are matched to a septic license or certification list published by a state agency.

Why a license-first directory

Septic contractor information is scattered. Some states license septic installers, some license only pumpers, some leave it to counties, and the lists that do exist sit on dozens of different agency websites in PDFs, spreadsheets and search tools. The Septic Guide gathers 26 of those state lists in one place and matches each license holder to a business, so a homeowner can see who is licensed in their county and confirm it with the agency in one click.

What we do and don't do

  • We list septic businesses and licensed individuals, and show the state credential we matched for each, with a link to the agency's lookup.
  • We list services a business shows on its own website, or that follow from its license type (a pumper license, for example).
  • We do not review or rate contractors' work, and nobody pays to rank higher.
  • We are not a septic contractor and do not perform, inspect or warrant any work.
